General Description: The Director, Finance and Administration is responsible for financial and administrative operations at the JHU Press. The DFA reports to the Director of the Press. Reporting directly to the DFA are the Accounting Manager, the Facilities Coordinator and a staff of eight.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct accounting and financial reporting for JHUP's 4 divisions: Books, Journals, Hopkins Fulfillment Services, and Project MUSE.
  • Direct the activities of the Accounting Department to ensure reporting is done accurately and promptly. This includes monthly financial reporting to department heads, quarterly account reconciliations, AAUP and AAP survey reporting, client and author reporting.
  • Identify and articulate JHUP accounting policies that are consistent with GAAP, JHUP business needs, and JHU requirements. Ensure that proper internal controls and documentation are in place. Ensure compliance with state sales and use tax requirements, VAT tax and GST requirements.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures for new and changing business activities such as print-on-demand, e-books, etc.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly management reports to JHUP department heads. Prepare and present quarterly and yearend financial reports to The JHUP Advisory Board.
  • Work with JHUP management on various business matters as needed: project profitability analysis, expense management, etc.
  • Direct accounting functions at the Press including cash and accounts payable operations in coordination with JHU policies and procedures.
  • Learn JHU requirements regarding cash management and ensure that JHUP remains in compliance
  • Learn JHU requirements regarding accounts payables (including payroll, T&E, etc) and ensure that JHUP remains in compliance.
  • Oversee Payables and Purchasing activities (PCARD, WebReq, etc.)
  • Manage the Press's annual budgeting and financial planning processes,
  • Coordinate annual Five-Year Plan budget preparation process. Solicit input from department managers and incorporate each department's strategic plans into the budget submission. Obtain and incorporate projections from Controller's Office, Budget Office and Facilities Management into the plan.
  • Prepare narrative financial report to accompany budget submission.
  • Prepare final financial report on Press operations vs the plan.
  • Serve as financial liaison between JHUP and various constituencies.
  • Serve as financial liaison between JHUP and the University departments (Budget Office, Controller's Office, Treasurer's Office)
  • Manage yearend audit inquiries from external auditors.
  • Work with systems developers of both JHU systems and JHUP systems to be sure that accounting functionality is properly addressed in systems planning.
  • Manage Facilities Coordinator, and relationship with JHU Real Estate and Facilities Departments, to ensure that JHUP has adequate office space for present and future needs.

Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree in accounting with five - seven years progressively responsible experience in a position or positions involving: a) supervising others to perform routine accounting operations, b) managing the accounting and budgeting functions for a business with revenues as well as costs and expenses, and c) working with or in a higher education environment. Must have strong analytical ability to anticipate and solve problems; excellent computer skills with prior systems implementation experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of JHU's SAP system and JHUP's TMS system; CPA certification or MBA preferred.

Assistant Network Administrator

General Description: The Assistant Network Administrator’s role is to assist the Network Administrator in assuring the stable operation of the infrastructure environment. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all systems related to the infrastructure which contains over 20 servers and 150 workstations and peripherals running primarily in a Windows 2003 environment.

RESAPONSIBILITIES:

  • Backup and assist Network Administrator with the administration of the enterprise servers.
  • Backup and assist Network Administrator with the administration of all security devices (e.g., firewall, IDS, IPS, content filtering)
  • Install, upgrade, and patch server applications and OS with assistance from the Network Administrator when needed.
  • Administer and maintain end user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
  • Perform and monitor backups for all systems; send backup tapes offsite; restore data as needed
  • Provide administration/postmaster functions for the GroupWise email systems; resolve problems related to the GroupWise Email System.
  • Distribute and supervise server storage space allotments
  • Be part of a rotating on-call schedule to provide 24/7 support for corporate computer systems and devices.
  • Assists in establishing standards, policies, and procedures as they apply to the use of technology at the Press.
  • Troubleshoot network performance and connectivity issues with assistance from the Network Administrator when needed.
  • Assist in analyzing system or application usage to plan for growth or increases in network capacity.
  • Assist with installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of end user desktops during the yearly equipment replacement cycle, or when the PC or Mac Micro Systems Technicians require additional assistance.
  • Assist with the design, implementation, and maintenance of a disaster recovery plan for OS, databases, network, servers, and software applications.
  • Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in support of systems procurement and development efforts.
  • Assist with network and security audits.
  • Interact with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors as required.
  • Documents procedural changes, system configuration modifications, and problem resolutions in our Help Desk application.
  • Performs special projects as assigned.

Qualifications: Two years college coursework (additonal education can substitute for experience). Experience with Microsoft Active Directory; Group Policy; PC hardware configuration, upgrade, diagnosis and repair. Experience using and administering Microsoft server and desktop operating systems . Knowledge of Backup Exec server software to back up and restore data. Ability to utilize the Internet to research and retrieve on-line information to assist in problem determination and resolution. Ability to use organizational skills to work independently and multi-task to keep pace with changing priorities.

NOTE: Knowledge of Linux OS; Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition and Symantec Mail Security for SMTP; Citrix Presentation Server; Macintosh OS and hardware will be given additional consideration . MCSE or CCNA certifications will also be given additional consideration

Preferred Qualifications: Associates Degree or High School Diploma with relevant IT certifications.

Sr. Programmer Analyst

General Description: Position will perform a major role in the planning, development, and implementation of computer-based information systems and will be responsible for formulating solutions to business/publishing problems through the use of electronic data processing technology. This position will have a major impact on the JHU Press by providing support for the creation and maintenance of existing and new search engines, existing and new statistics packages and various means of access control. In addition, the position will support e-commerce efforts for MUSE, Books and Journals. The position will also support all electronic publishing initiatives through innovative technical solutions.

  • The primary duties and responsibilities of the job: Applies system analysis to solve problems, including determining software and system functional and technical specifications;
  • Meets with technical staff to clarify specifications; takes program specifications, description of data, what processes are preferred and analyzes problems to determine solution steps;
  • Develops or modifies computer programs; develops test plans and performs unit, system and integrated testing for individual assignments, vendor software releases;
  • Develops, maintains, documents and tests new or existing programs; adheres to project-wide standards for data collection/storage, structured programming techniques, documentation requirements, testing, reporting, software/hardware releases;
  • Uses programming and database knowledge and critical thinking to resolve moderately complex technical or procedural problems;

Position interacts with divisional functional and technical staff for topics related to configuration, coding, testing and problem resolution within the broader scope of assigned project; identifies and reports software issues and enhancement opportunities to project management; participates in meetings to identify possible solutions, including work to be done for computer enhancements; and tracks and records (in time tracking system) time spent on tasks and projects. The individual may be heavily involved in systems analysis, programming, database design and frequent and detailed dialogues with the organization's management, external organizations or advisories boards. These duties are both highly diversified and specialized governed generally only by broad instructions and dependent upon the individual's own comprehensive analysis and judgment. The job shall include the implementation of information systems and participation in the formulation of procedures.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree; 3+ years related experience (additional related experience may be substituted for degree requirement). Position requires working knowledge of HTML, MySQL, PHP, XML, XSLT, CSS, Perl, JavaScript; knowledge of AJAX concept; knowledge of high level object-oriented programming, Java; good interface designing skills. Have solid work experience with Unix/Linux environment. Ability and willingness to learn new programming languages and technologies quickly. Must be highly service oriented, self-motivated, and possess a team-working attitude with strong and effective communication skills; and the ability to work in a demanding and dynamic team environment. Job will requires the ability to build search engines and statistics packages according to industry standards; The candidate must be able to work in a demanding and dynamic team environment; be aware of new and changing publishing technologies; and be willing to mentor junior staff.

Incumbent must be willing and able to be available 24/7 if necessary.

Preferred Qualifications: Publishing work experience.
